Food And Health

The food we eat is the ultimate mantra to good health. We ought to choose wisely. The millennial generation has changed the way food is perceived and consumed. Food plays a major role in how healthy or not a generation turns out to be.

Today’s generation is bombarded with junk foods and aerated drinks, destroying not just physical fitness, but physiological health as well with its adverse effects. “To stay well, you eat well”!

Food and food joints have understood the requirements of today’s taste buds and are catering to what is severely unhealthy to the body. They fail to realize and notice the effects of consuming junk food regularly. Obesity, diabetes, cardio-related concerns, hypertension, untimely aging, stress, and cholesterol are a few health-related concerns we face today. Cancer is another chronic concern related to all the severely preserved, packed, and junked food we eat.

Eating healthy has become more of a “style statement” and eating junk, is a lifestyle! Burgers, pizzas, fried food, aerated cold drinks, and many more such fried and fatty foods have taken over healthy meals leaving behind more people with severe lifestyle and food habit-related health issues.

Eating “healthy” is now an expensive affair!

Deteriorating health, on one hand, there are many cases of mental and psychological instability and stagnation seen in today’s generation mainly due to unhealthy food habits.

Fruits and vegetables are not as healthy as they used to be – nothing is fresh anymore – everything is adulterated with artificial pesticides and fertilizers. From snacks made out of plastic and poultry intoxicated with steroids, most of what we consume today is unhealthy.

To begin making a difference, we must begin with making more healthy choices. From buying fruits and vegetables from local vendors and farmers to avoiding packaged and preserved factory-made foods, we can take small steps to a healthier life.

We must always remember – a healthy mind and a healthy body is what we need to maintain well-being and inspire good health in our future generations!

Friends

Calm in the ocean
Breeze in the sky,
Beauty of nature
Friends who don't lie:
Freshness of flowers
Vastness of the night sky,
Honour and power
Come with friends, ask why!

Truth behind smiles:
Faith, love, hope, and likes -
Some live on, some don't;
Friends are mysterious
Angels who drop by!

Time gives us people
To fall back on, to talk,
To tear and to rely on.
Prowess of understanding
Being there and kindling kindness;
Friends are more than
Fun and happy faces.

Joy of laughter, tears of glee;
More than a lover,
Never less than family:
Friends - truth to which one agrees.
Say no more, glad for them,
For being there, walking beside,
Shoulder to shoulder:
Footprints meet,
Just how it's meant to be.

More than smiles
More than the travelled miles
Presence of mind
And shoulder to cry,
Friends are God-given
Blessing of a lifetime!

Rocketry

Today after a very long time, I feel mortified to be part of a nation that did what it did to a man like Nambi Narayanan. For those of you who don’t know who he is like I didn’t know who he was till I saw Madhavan’s Rocketry, he is one of those pillars of ISRO who made it possible for India to get to what it has achieved in the field of Space and Research.

We don’t get to enjoy good movies often, but when we do, we get ones like Rocketry. To begin with, may I dare to say, we don’t deserve men like Nambi Narayanan in our country. To a man who has gone beyond measures to financially, physically, and technologically aids the nation to do better and achieve a position in the global run for successful space missions, it is simply unacceptable what has happened to him and his family.

I would like to take time and appreciate and admire the impeccable job R. Madhavan has done. He brought to light something so serious and significant. Not all filmmakers are interested in delivering good-quality movies to the audience. There’s always a preconceived notion that the public only likes ‘masala’ and commercial movies – well, I do not agree.

Some movies make us laugh, some make us emotional, some make us ponder and some inspire us. Very few movies virtually slap their audience – Rocketry was that slap on our face for not knowing the facts, not being aware of what was happening to a person of substance like him, and for being part of a society that jumps to conclusions and rioting against one another for merely NO gain whatsoever!

I want to request each one of you to stand up as an individual and rise against constitutional and bureaucratic entanglements that destroy the meaning of secularism and democracy. Honestly, we as citizens of this country should not be allowing such things to happen. We should use our common sense a little more, research what we hear and see, and then choose to believe or disbelieve the obvious. It’s high time we do something about being gullible and taken for granted.

It’s been happening for years and it will continue to happen if we continue to live like the three wise monkeys – the only difference is that those monkeys taught us to see, hear and speak no evil – today we see, hear and speak nothing, as if we don’t care what’s happening with/to us as a country. Ignorance is not bliss.

It’s time to take in the essence of what’s being said. Movies if viewed in the right spirit are not simply works of art, but also powerful social messages that force us to open our eyes and see reality.

Rocketry was a reality check. Thank you, Madhavan for making this film. It was worth every goosebump, every tear shed, every emotion felt. Kudos to good movies.

Freedom Means Ownership

To begin with, freedom comes with great accountability. You earn freedom when you are wholly mindful of what you are capable of, competent on, and responsible for. The more you practice being yourself and taking ownership of your actions, the more liberated you become.

You have to make smart choices and savvy decisions to reach what is called absolute freedom. Your choices and actions have an impact on how liberated you are as a person. The more you know yourself and take accountability for who you are as an individual, the better understanding you have about your freedom.

Taking ownership of your life and actions is a great way to impart your ideologies to those around you. You radiate confidence and inspire others to take decisions that can eventually lead them to their freedom.

To be candid if I can, freedom is not just about living by yourself, doing things yourself and not being accountable to anyone. It is in fact much greater. It is understanding, why you are doing what you are doing. That very understanding of your drive, your inspiration, your goals and your passion is the core of being liberated as an individual.

Freedom therefore is accountability, the right attitude towards life, wise choices, the character you possess, the actions you take and the ones you don’t, the standing you build for yourself and ownership of your life. It is not just actions… It is a way of life.

Always remember, with freedom to think and act the way you want comes great responsibility towards yourself. Own your life. Own your actions. Own your freedom.

Attention

I like how my hair flows
Through the winds, over my brows.
I like how I smile and walk and talk
And kiss and sit and breathe.

I like me for what I am
But I don’t choose me more often.
Craving for something that am
Not able to put a finger on.

So here I am at twenty-five
Crying with the tap open
Knowing what I want and
Not choosing me one more time!

Attention is an obsession
Craving for more the more I get
Attention from you is all I long
Stay in my heart and never look back.

So when you don’t notice how my hair flows
I’d rather tie them up
And when you don’t see the little things
Little things inside me die.
Your attention that I see!
From what it was to what it is
From what I want to what I get.

Though I like me for what I am
I don’t choose me more often
For I crave your attention
And what a big loser I be often!

Connected The Right Way

Picture of Writer in a garden with headphones on her ears.

Human beings are social animals and thus it is our core requirement to be around people who mould us and support us. We are designed to be within a circle. A circle of family, friends, relatives, acquaintances – people in general. Yet, we the Millennials & Gen Y are a generation that dwells inside our smartphones and never bothers to give time to real-time people around us. Always looking for friends and counseling in the virtual world. A time has already come when family dinners are occasional and online “family groups” are active!

This lack of communication and face-to-face conversation is the major cause of unhappiness and other mind and emotional instability noticed in today’s generation. We are con-netted and not connected. This perhaps is the root cause of health hazards that are probably not too serious on the outside, (like it may seem for now), but are slowly but surely eating up the health and wellness of the current generation and the generations to come.

It is hard to put a finger on what exactly the problem with our generation is. There are many – from the rising number of suicides to the incessantly growing crime rates, there are many factors that need to be sorted.

Phones are getting smarter day by day but the ones who are using them outlandish, too relied upon, lazy, unstable in all ways, disinterested, unhappy, low, offended, aloof, indifferent, unfriendly, and unhealthy! Above all low attention span.

This rising issue is also taking away outdoor playtime of young children. Young kids are given ipads, video games, and mobile phones to pass time. This leads to obesity and other health issues. The situation is worse than we think. This is enough to destroy the wellness of future generations, making all the dysfunctions and the mental, physical, emotional, and psychological instability a part of genetics!

Allocating time off screens can go a long way in terms of health and wellness. Bringing back moments spent being physically present and among loved ones can aid in fighting major concerns like depression, anxiety, and fear of losing out!

The ever-increasing consumption of social media and aspirations to behave and live a lifestyle that is seen online is hazardous to health and for the overall contentment in life.

Let us make sure we do not let this heat beat the future. Let us stand up and stay connected the right way…

Your Body

Your body loaded with energy, the beats, and the aura expresses who you are as a person. Hence it is your commitment to sustain good health and hygiene to keep your body positive. Furthermore you are accountable to do right by your body. Yes, that’s the message.

Little efforts like clipping your nails, keeping your hair uncluttered, wearing fresh clothes, eating a balanced diet, and not indulging in harming your system with external elements like illegal substances can go a long way.

Maintaining a positive outlook, controlling anxiety and stress with support and help, knowing what your body needs, keeping your physical health a priority, and making sure your body gets all the appropriate nourishment and care from your end are very important. Give your body the respect it requires.

Today, women who tend to dislike their bodies are in millions. Right from a young age! This must change. Men who do not maintain proper hygiene and lifestyle habits also must start caring for their bodies the earliest.

Your aura, your vibes, and your personality, all depend on how you maintain, preserve and respect your body. Your appearance, big or small, thin or chubby, it’s how you carry yourself that matters the most.

You don’t need a flat stomach, broader shoulders, thin legs, and abs to look good. Looking good comes from someplace deep than what mere eyes see on the outside. Therefore, kick-start a lifestyle that suits you, where you love and care for who you are and what you are – from inside and out!

The Timelines of Communication

Communication is one of the numerous necessary aspects of getting information across an individual or a group of individuals. The medium and the methods of communication rapidly increased as the advances, improvements, and progress in the field of technology skyrocketed.

Since 2018, the world has expanded dramatically, and so has how we communicate with one another.

In late December 2019, the world was hit by the Pandemic, and social media, and virtual communication soared to new heights. It was unseen, unreal, and beyond imagination. If we look at the timeline…

We have more online portals and applications today than we had perhaps two years back. With more grocery apps, more movie apps, higher rates of subscribers to OTT platforms, umpteen opportunities for virtual communication, virtual interviews, more working hours clocked online, an increase in usage and users of social media like Instagram and Facebook, everything has become just as far our fingers can go!

Letter writing is an art that died a few years ago. Normal telephone calls don’t happen as much today. Everything has become more mobile, more ‘on the go’. More and more video calls than meeting up in person. We are taken over by technology. We forget our roots!

This is when we need to realize that there are a few things we need to hold on to and show our future generations – like being more available for one another – encouraging communication on a more personal level.

We must continue to write letters, make phone calls, meet our friends and family, sit down for meals together, and so on. This will help us remember, cherish and contribute values that we have been brought up with to the next generation.

Though technology and advancements are part of our lives, we must understand and value what we have come through. After all, it was not that bad!

Pause and ponder!
Pause and reflect!
Pause and rekindle!

Me

I am my master,
I am my friend,
I am my teacher,
I am my strength!
I am whole and more,
And everything is fine;
I am daring and caring
And a special kind.

I allow no one to
Judge, disrespect and
Belittle: I am more than that.

I am my mentor,
I am my inspiration,
I am my truth, my
Purpose and path.

I am courteous,
I am grateful,
I am nature,
Vast, eternal and
Rooted upright.

I am brewing coffee,
Steaming hot tea,
A picturesque scene,
A lyrical gallery
Of poems and pictures,
All so wonderful;
It makes up the entirety
Of who I call Me!

Good, bad, wonderful,
I am everything I want to be;
I am everything I ought to be:
I am me.
